How's it going? To those who follow me: I won't promise that I'll always follow back. I'm a picky kind of girl ;) But thank you for following, and taking time to check out my blog!

“Most humans think the appearance of quiet is quiet. They do not see that sometimes the enemy is as quiet as the serpent. Only when it has stolen all of their eggs will they know bad walks in the quiet as well as the noisy.”

My gift for wecameasmarauders for the Jily Secret Santa is finally done

Sorry for taking up your whole dashboard

Hagrid had always liked James, and he had always liked Lily, but he liked them even more when they were together, because that’s when they were at their happiest, and Hagrid wanted them both to be happy.

Every Other Midnight

“Where is he?” Lily demanded, arms crossed so tightly that they looked paler than usual. A few people looked up from their homework or games of chess to glance curiously at their direction.

“You have to be more specific, my dear,” Sirius replied, not bothering to look up from his set of cards. From across the coffee table, Remus shot him a warning look but otherwise said nothing.

“Don’t be so thick. You know I mean Potter,” she shot back impatiently, looking as though she wanted nothing more than to grab the cards from the other boy’s hands and spill them all over the common room floor.

The crowd before him bustled with the final goodbyes and the promises  of keeping in touch that solemnized the end of fifth year. James exhaled sharply, scanning the crowd of the Entrance Hall for any sign of his mates. Instead, his eyes fell on the redhead leaning against a wall to his right, almost as if every part of him was already aware she had been standing there all along before he saw her. Her arms were crossed stiffly over her chest and her eyes stared fixedly forward. With a pang, he realized Lily had already seen him and was determinedly avoiding the very spot where he stood. Somehow, he preferred to be yelled at, even hexed, over being completely ignored.

Doing his best to brush aside the uneasy feeling in the pit of his stomach, James ruffled his hair nervously and took a deep breath. “Evans,” he finally said. “Can we talk?”

Lily’s head snapped to meet his eyes, incredulous that he had the nerve to speak to her. She held his gaze and for a moment it looked as if this time she would listen— that was good enough for him.

“Listen, what happened the other day with Snape, I’m—”

But before he could get another word out, Lily shook her head in disbelief, and with a scowl, she was gone, taking with her any hope he foolishly held on to of making things right. James considered going after her, as he always had.

But there was no fight left in him—something he never thought possible.

The sound of the crowd, which seemed to have vanished for that single minute he spoke to her, rang at his ears once more as he watched her go for what then felt like the last time.

“Happy… birthday,” she says breathlessly for the fifth time that night as she disentangles herself from him.

He replies with an inarticulate grunt as his arm lazily wraps itself around her. There is silence as they both catch their breaths, her cheek resting against his chest.

He asks her to look for his glasses in the kitchen but as soon as she sees the ring she knows that it’s what he really sent her in to find.  He’s been leaving it around for days, in bathroom drawers and on bedside tables and in her pockets, like he’s going to surprise her into saying yes. Like she’ll suddenly change her mind after telling him repeatedly that getting married in the middle of a war is the stupidest idea she’s ever heard.

She never really looks at it up close - usually because he’s looming over her shoulder, grinning like a loon - but she does now, when she’s alone, and the design of the thing surprises her.  Tasteful.  Elegant. Surprising because it’s James and he always did love the ostentatious. Without really knowing why, she starts to slip it on her thin white finger. She thinks about being married to James Potter in the middle of a war. She finds she doesn’t entirely hate the idea.

“Find anything interesting?”  James appears in the doorway and Lily lets her hands drop, clumsily yanking the ring off her left hand to clench it hidden in her right. His self-satisfied smirk shows that he knows exactly what she’s hiding. ”Anything you particularly fancy?”

”What? No!” she snaps, getting up and surreptitiously dropping the ring back where she found it.  ”And I didn’t find your glasses, either—which probably explains why you seem so blissfully unaware of the state of your hair. It looks like something crawled on top of your head and died there. And your jacket.  You’re a mess, Potter. And we’re late.”

She stalks out past him but when he catches up, he takes her hand and his thumb brushes across the little round pink indentation on her palm where she’d gripped the ring.

“Five days.” He said finally. “You give me five days to make you fall for me. And I get to do whatever I want with you, for those days.”

“And what do you get if you win?” She asked uncertainly.

He held a small smile. “I get you.”

“Would it be so bad if she lost? What was at stake?

My dignity, maybe?  She thought.

But consider your options. You could either be “right” and “win”, and not even be friends with him anymore…

Or admit you’re wrong, and get to be with the boy who makes your palms sweat and knees go slack, who makes you want to jump into his arms every time you see him, the boy who kisses you like you’re the only thing that matters…”

So so so so so so so so so so so good.
